Magnesium Mix

Homemade Magnesium Boost Mix

Description

This homemade seed and nut mix combines just four ingredients: pumpkin seeds, almonds, sesame seeds, and unsweetened cocoa powder. It has a nutty, lightly chocolatey flavour and can be sprinkled over oatmeal, stirred into yogurt, or blended into smoothies.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Toasting Time: 5–7 minutes
Cooling Time: 15 minutes
Yield: Approximately 1 cup

Ingredients

  • ½ cup shelled, unsalted pumpkin seeds
  • ¼ cup unsalted almonds
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Lightly Toast the Almonds

Place the almonds in a dry frying pan over low heat. Stir for 3–4 minutes until lightly fragrant, then transfer to a plate.

2. Toast the Seeds

Add the pumpkin seeds to the pan and stir over low heat for 2–3 minutes. Remove, then toast the sesame seeds separately for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly. Avoid browning them too deeply, as they can become bitter.

You can also skip toasting and use the ingredients raw.

3. Cool Completely

Spread the almonds and seeds on a plate. Allow them to cool completely before grinding to help prevent the mixture from becoming oily.

4. Grind in Short Pulses

Place the cooled almonds, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds in a dry grinder or food processor. Pulse briefly until you have a coarse powder.

Avoid continuous blending: the natural oils can turn the mixture into a paste.

5. Add the Cocoa

Add the unsweetened cocoa powder and pulse a few more times until evenly combined.

6. Store

Transfer to a clean, dry, airtight jar and refrigerate.

How to Use

  • Stir 1–2 tablespoons into plain yogurt.
  • Sprinkle over oatmeal or porridge.
  • Blend into a banana smoothie.
  • Stir into warm milk; expect some settling because the nuts and seeds will not dissolve.

The mix is unsweetened, so its flavour will be nutty with a slightly bitter cocoa finish.

Tips and Notes

  • Use shelled pumpkin seeds, also called pepitas.
  • Choose unsweetened cocoa powder rather than sweetened drinking chocolate.
  • For a finer texture, grind in small batches and pause frequently.
  • Always use a dry spoon when taking the mixture from the jar.
  • This recipe contains almonds and sesame, both common allergens.

Storage

Refrigerate in an airtight container and use within 2–3 weeks for freshness. For longer storage, freeze small portions for up to 3 months. Discard if it develops mould or a stale, rancid smell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a drink powder?

It can be added to drinks, but it will not dissolve like instant cocoa. Blending gives a smoother result.

Is it sweet?

No. These four ingredients contain no added sweetener.

Why did my mixture become sticky?

Grinding for too long releases the oils. Use short pulses and stop once the texture resembles a coarse meal.

Servings and Nutrition

Suggested Serving: 1–2 tablespoons.

Pumpkin seeds, almonds, sesame seeds, and cocoa all contribute magnesium. The amount per serving depends on the ingredient weights and portion size. This is a nutritious food mix rather than a standardised magnesium supplement.
